How to Properly Understand a Client Vision for a Room

When you are working as a housing professional, you are certainly in the business of being able to turn a client’s dreams into a reality in terms of the rooms that you are creating for them.

However, this can also prove to be a double-edged sword as you do not want to end up in a situation in which you make some vital mistakes. This might leave your clients feeling upset and frustrated that their rooms have not been created with the accuracy and attention to detail that they originally had in mind. So, let’s find out a bit more on client vision and how you can better understand what they are getting at.

    Have Several Meetings

To begin with, it can be very hard to put your finger on a client vision in only a single meeting. It often takes time before you can really boil down to what they are trying to communicate to you, which is why having a series of meetings can prove to be the more viable approach to take. In the initial meeting, you are often just getting an overview of what they would like you to create. With each additional meeting, you can get closer and closer to a stage of accuracy that really works for both you and them.

Use Software to Bring Their Vision to Life

In days gone by, architects and designers would only be able to work using sketchpads and handwritten documents, but this has all changed now in a big way. Therefore, you certainly need to take advantage of any software that is out there which allows you to better understand and create a vision. There are all sorts of design programs and more like this that not only have you being able to create some magical things, but also have the ability to change along the way as revisions are inevitably made based on changing tastes or specifications in the home creation journey.

    Collect Images for Inspiration

It is often the case that your clients are going to bring you different images of particular features that they find special and would like to incorporate into their own homes. Rather than simply disregarding them, it is always going to be a good idea to take them into account and allow them to inform the work that you are doing. Ultimately, the old saying goes that a picture is worth a thousand words and there is more than a grain of truth in this when it comes to bringing a client vision to life.

Ensure That You Have Your Own Input

While it can be tempting to simply allow your client’s visions to run away with them, you are the expert in this particular field and as such, you should be in a position in which you are able to advise in all sorts of different areas. This is certainly the case in terms of the specific styles that you know about. However, it is also true that you may need to rein in a client if their vision is becoming too grandiose and it is getting to the stage that it is beyond the realms of feasibility. Ultimately, you should feel comfortable when it comes to presenting a vision to your clients that is both open and honest.

Do Not Forget About the Practical Features

Of course, this may well be something that you do not really need to be told twice about, but there is no doubt that ensuring that your clients are steered on the right path from a practical point of view is another useful service that you are able to provide for them. Essentially, this means not allowing a room to be overcrowded, as well as considering issues such as how well people are going to be able to move around the space. There may also be some practicalities in terms of electrical sockets and anything else that needs to be urgently taken into account and not overlooked for any reason whatsoever.

Use Case Studies of Past Designs

Sometimes, it is going to be the case that your clients will come to you without a clear idea of what they would like from you (or even a clear idea in their head of the end result they want). So, it can certainly help when it comes to getting the ball rolling if you are able to bring out a book of your past designs. Not only does this show your credentials as an architect or a designer, but it also allows a more concrete vision to be developed based on what you have created in days gone by. As you move through your work in the industry, you will gradually start to build up more and more case studies, which is only going to be a positive thing when it comes to attracting and keeping clients in the future.

Do Not Be Afraid of Being Ambitious

While there was some advice earlier in the blog post about making sure that your clients are reined in and do not expect too much, it is also the case that you should not let this stand in the way of being as ambitious as possible in what you are creating for them. This will enable you to walk away with a portfolio of work that you are genuinely proud of rather than anything that simply sits squarely in the middle of the road.

Understanding the vision of your client when it comes to the creation of a single room or even an entire building is something that can prevent so many different problems from occurring further down the line. Not only this, but from a positive perspective, it can allow you to create something for them that fills both you and them with pride. So, make sure that each and every one of the pieces of advice are noted down and taken seriously to ensure that you are doing your best work and leaving satisfied customers behind you.
