Education inequality persists - EUbusiness Week newsletter 803
EUbusiness Week 803 top stories: 2017 eurozone growth fastest in a decade; EU sets out new 2030 targets for clean cars; EU carbon market reform deal falls short; New EU gas rules could staunch Russian pipeline; Landmark EU-Cuba agreement enters into force; Paris is Europe's most innovative city 2017
Publisher's Note
Educational attainment still depends on your socio-economic background,
says a report out this week which looks at the key challenges for
Europe's education systems. A couple of facts: only 44% of young people
aged 18-24 who had finished school at lower secondary level were
employed; and the share of 15-year-olds under-achieving in basic science
increased from 16% in 2012 to 20.6% in 2015.
Equal opportunity for all is a guiding principle of the EU, and,
as Education Commissioner Tibor Navracsics says, education systems
"have a special role to play in building a fairer society by offering
equal chances to everybody."
