EU to offer Ukraine ambitious partnership: France's Sarkozy
(WARSAW) - The European Union will offer Ukraine an "ambitious partnership" in September during France's six-month tenure as EU president, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Wednesday in Warsaw.
"The French presidency will organise an EU-Ukraine summit in Paris in September where we will propose an ambitious partnership for our Ukrainian friends," Sarkozy said at a joint press conference with Poland's President Lech Kaczynski.
Sarkozy did not provide details of what the partnership proposal would entail.
The EU has included Ukraine in its policy of good neighbourly relations, but has refused to specify whether it could eventually join the 27-member bloc.
A member of the EU since May 2004, ex-communist Poland has long been a strong advocate of Ukraine's bid to join both the EU and NATO.
Sarkozy made the comment during his one day working visit to Warsaw, his first to Poland. The French and Polish presidents concluded a Franco-Polish strategic partnership.
Sarkozy also announced France would drop restrictions on its labour market for workers from eight 2004 EU newcomer states as of July 1, the first day of France's EU presidency.
