Buying your first car can be both exciting and daunting. With so many different models to choose from, how do you know which one is right for you?

Here, you’ll discover some of the best hints and tips on what to look for when choosing your first car.

    Consider buying a used model

You may have your heart set on a new model, but did you know you can buy an almost new car at a fraction of the cost? Many dealerships offer used cars that are just a year old. These vehicles in usually in as new condition, only they are sold at a much lower cost thanks to depreciation.

If you’re buying a used car, it is recommended you carry out checks when going to view the vehicle. Ideally, take a mechanic with you so they can determine whether there are any hidden faults you may not be aware of. This is especially useful if you’re buying from a private seller rather than a well-known dealership.

Look at all of the costs involved

It’s easy to choose a vehicle based upon its appearance. However, you’ll need to take into account a lot of different factors before choosing the right model for you. One of the most important things to look into is the costs involved.

As well as the initial cost of buying the car, you’ll also need to factor in the costs of running it. You can work out the full costs by taking advantage of the calculator offered by The Money Advice Service. It would be pointless buying a car if you can’t afford to run it.

    Think about what you need

You’re also going to want to think about what you actually need from the car. Do you require a lot of boot space for example? Whether you will be mostly driving on the motorway or city roads will also make a difference to the type of model you choose. Would you prefer an eco-friendly model? Write a list which includes all of your preferences and requirements to ensure you’re choosing the best model for you.

These are just a small selection of the things you’ll need to consider when buying your first car. It’s important not to make a rushed decision as next to your house, your car is one of the most important assets you’ll own.
