Publisher's Note
================
"The financial crisis and climate change, with the
preparation of the Copenhagen conference, will be our main
priorities," said Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt
as his country took over the six-month presidency of the
European Union on 1 July.

Sweden faces a number of uncertainties, however, with a new
Commission to be installed, and a new European Parliament
which has indicated it may postpone its decision on a new
Commission president until the autumn. With the Irish
referendum on the Lisbon Treaty due in October,
institutional difficulties may overshadow the new
presidency's laudable aims.

1. EU confident of treaty ratification after court ruling
---------------------------------------------------------
Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso has expressed
confidence that the Lisbon treaty would be ratified
across the EU by the autumn, despite this week's German
court ruling suspending the process there.

2. EU rules signal cheaper mobile calls for travellers
------------------------------------------------------
European holidaymakers can expect lower bills for using
their mobile phones while abroad in Europe this summer
because new EU regulated price caps took effect across
the bloc on Wednesday.

3. European economic confidence improves
----------------------------------------
European business and consumer confidence firmed in June
for the third month running albeit from depressed levels,
according to an EU survey.

Eurozone unemployment hits 10-year high of 9.5 pct

4. Galileo satnav project ill-conceived: EU auditors
----------------------------------------------------
The EU's much delayed satellite navigation network project
Galileo has been ill-prepared and badly managed, the
European Court of Auditors charged on Monday.
http://www.eubusiness.com/news-eu/1246294039.59

5. GMO maize strain safe: EU food agency
----------------------------------------
A genetically modified strain of maize, banned in some EU
countries, poses no risk to health or the environment,
declares the European Food Safety Authority. The move once
again pits the Commission against the Member States, most
of whom do not support use of the maize.

6. Bendy cucumbers, knobbly carrots return to EU shelves
--------------------------------------------------------
Bendy cucumbers, knobbly carrots and other strangely shaped
fruit and vegetables, long the source of jibes over EU
micro-regulation, were allowed back onto European
supermarket shelves from Wednesday.

Comment of the Week
-------------------
Commenting on our piece "Brown backs Blair for EU
presidency", Mike Parr writes:

"... it could be rather embarrassing for the EU if its
President were forced into some unfortunate admissions (not
that such admissions would bother Tony "Teflon" Blair -
after all in his view God was/is on his side). It says much
for Brown's detachment from reality that it even occurred
to him that Blair could be a suitable candidate."
