Publisher's Note
================
Europeans' privacy is the big challenge for the next decade,
said Commissioner Viviane Reding, announcing a drive to
rewrite European data protection law.

The issue is a sensitive one, and on Thursday the EP's Civil
Liberties Committee rejected a data-sharing deal with the
U.S. to give it access to Europeans' bank data as part of
anti-terror probes.

But with 41.7 million Europeans now using social networking
sites, the EC is determined to update the 1995 Data Protection
Directive - to keep abreast of technological change and
ensure the right to privacy, legal certainty for industry,
as well as the take-up of new technologies.

Analysis
--------
Russia: it's the near future. Russia is a thriving multi-
party democracy with a media free of state control. It has
become a member of NATO and is thinking of joining the
European Union. A crazed fantasy? This was the vision put
forward Wednesday by a think-tank set up by President Dmitry
Medvedev of the path Russia needs to take in the next years.
