6. EU, tobacco firm team up against cigarette smuggling

Publisher's Note
================
A Chatham House study of progress made in combating illegal
logging and improving forest governance in developing
countries has brought the EU's own efforts in this area
under the microscope this week.

The EU Action Plan for Forest Law Enforcement Governance and
Trade Action Plan has led to agreements with Congo and
Ghana, where operators provide clear evidence that all wood
products placed on the EU market have a legal origin. Talks
continue on similar agreements with Malaysia, Indonesia,
Liberia and Central African Republic.

The Commission is now encouraging all wood-producing
countries to sign the voluntary agreements. Only then will
consumers in the countries who import, process and consume
wood products have certainty these are of a legal origin.
