Publisher's Note
================
European industries have for a number of years raised
concerns on the export restrictions which China applies
on key raw materials. This week the EU and the US have
launched action at the WTO, saying the policy provides
unfair advantages for Chinese industries using the inputs.

The materials - which include bauxite, coke and silicon
metal - are key inputs for many downstream products in the
steel, aluminium, and chemical sectors. Trade Commissioner
Catherine Ashton says the Chinese restrictions "distort
competition and increase global prices". They also make
things particularly difficult for Europe's companies in
this economic downturn.

Comment of the Week
-------------------
Commenting on our piece "EU Parliament chief blasts
Britain's conservatives", Angeliki Antoniadou writes:

"Mr. Poettering is absolutely right! And excuse me but I
do not really believe that the elections of the European
Parliament had been billed as a unofficial referendum on
the Lisbon Treaty! The elections were 'tests' for the
national governments of the EU states. All the other
countries voted taking into account their country's
governmental handling of the economic crisis, employment
policy etc, and therefore I do not at all believe that
the British did otherwise!"
