While some people may view online casinos as merely a casual entertainment platform, where they can play Crazy Time during their lunch hour and indulge in the occasional flutter, the truth is that online gambling is now a major European industry.

In fact, the European online gambling market is so profitable that it has been projected to grow by 9.2% over the next five years. But what are the reasons for this remarkable growth, and why has online gambling become such a prominent industry on the continent?

Read on to find out more, and to discover why online gambling means such big business in Europe.

    Virtual fun vs brick-and-mortar

One of the biggest causes of the expansion of the online gambling industry is the sheer prevalence of laptops, tablets, and cutting-edge mobile phones around the world. With the proliferation of these devices ? mobile phones in particular ? society has developed a subsequent reliance on the online world.

More and more aspects of daily life are being conducted virtually ? from banking transactions to remote working, grocery shopping, and, of course, entertainment. Rather than make the effort to go out to a brick-and-mortar casino, people can simply curl up on their couch at home and play online casino games whenever they feel like it or place a bet on an upcoming sporting event.

In addition, registration at online casinos is becoming increasingly easier, which means that people can begin gambling within minutes. Many online casinos also offer a variety of secure payment methods, including e-wallets and cryptocurrency, making deposits and withdrawals more convenient than ever.

    An abundance of choice

Another reason for the rapid burgeoning of the online gambling market is the sheer abundance of choices that players can enjoy these days. There are literally hundreds of online casinos to choose between, the majority of them fully licensed and accredited to ensure a safe and secure gambling experience. Rather than being limited to one or two land-based casinos in their area, players now have a wealth of choices at their fingertips, easily accessible so long as they have a phone or device and a secure Internet connection.

Online casinos and sportsbooks also offer a much greater assortment of options when it comes to games and sporting events to place bets on. Many online casinos will offer hundreds of different games to choose from, including expertly developed online slots, table games such as blackjack and baccarat, and even live-streaming dealer games. This breadth of choice simply cannot be replicated by brick-and-mortar casinos.

    A loosening of legislation

Last but not least, another important driver of Europe’s online gambling market is the increasing flexibility shown by several countries in their legislative approaches to gambling. While some nations still remain rather draconian in their gambling laws ? including France and Cyprus ? other countries, such as Sweden, Denmark, and Romania ? have become increasingly online gambling-friendly. This allows both the online casinos and sportsbooks ? and the players themselves ? more freedom and has opened the gateway to a profitable future for online gambling in Europe.
