The times when gambling was a forbidden activity have passed, and now online casinos are fully legalized in numerous countries. And, of course, this has increased the demand for gaming establishments among users. Online gambling in the leading European countries attracts around 7 million customers, and the annual growth of the market is about 3%.

Many states still prohibit the operation of gaming clubs. Those allowing such activities have strict requirements concerning licensing and high taxes for the online casino owners. For instance, in 2018, the profits from the gambling industry reached over $80 billion, and each year this sum grows proportionally. So, let’s take a look at some details about casinos in different states.

    Gambling in the United Kingdom

The UK has the largest gaming market in Europe, and it was one of the first to provide proper legislation for gambling sites. The United Kingdom is recognized as one of the mature gambling jurisdictions in Europe, and other countries may follow this model in terms of transparency in their technical standards and focus on player protection.

Almost a half of the adult UK population regularly bet on sports and spin the reel. Casinos are considered an integral part of British culture since it’s a fairly common entertainment for residents. Activities are regulated by the Gambling Act 2005, which allows operators of land-based and online establishments to conduct business after acquiring a licensing of UKGC.

Casino Games and Slots in France

Playing in casinos has always been popular in France, and people enjoyed risky games for many centuries. The French gambling industry is the largest market in Europe, and the numerous casinos in the southern part of the country are known all over the world. However, while offline establishments can operate freely, online gaming sites face restrictions.

    Italian Gaming Industry

The gambling history in Italy takes its roots in the Roman Empire, where the first prototypes of gaming clubs were established. Ancient Romans have made such risky games widespread, bringing them to the neighboring regions. Modern Italian laws also allow gambling activities, differentiating games based on luck and products requiring skills. According to such rules, Italians consider sports betting and government lotteries are the latter option, making them fully legal.

However, since the illegal market is also significantly growing in Europe, the Italian government faced the need to change gambling legislation. During the last decade, the country provided the possibility to enjoy numerous casino games absolutely legally.

    Gambling Activities in Germany

Despite the high taxes in the industry, Germany is in fourth place in terms of casino profitability among all European countries. The market is strictly regulated by the government, implying that all legal online gaming clubs should adhere to the State Treaty of Gambling (2021).

German online casinos provide a wide range of entertainment options for their players, including poker, sports betting, slot machines, and lotteries. However, it’s worth noting that not so many online gaming clubs operate legally in the country since it’s expensive and hard to get a proper licensing.

Is Legal Gambling a Good Idea?

Gambling is still prohibited in many European states, which often leads to the appearance of illegal markets. Michael Dagger, British Betting and Gaming Council CEO, states that strict regulations of the industry can lead to a decrease in licensed gaming clubs. So, experts state that having a more open market allows involving more companies, which will eventually provide significant benefits for the country itself.
