Further and faster was the message to Europe at the climate action
summit at the United Nations this week. The summit's aim was to advance
climate action and to step up implementation of the Paris Agreement.
Turning targets into concrete action is now most important. A lot of
investment is needed if the EU is to become climate neutral by 2050. The
new president-elect of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen,
plans to present a 'European Green Deal' in her first one hundred days
in office. And if Europe is to reach its target, it will have to speed
up efforts towards adopting a more ambitious climate target by early

1. Suspension of Parliament unlawful, rules UK Supreme Court
The prorogation of Britain's Parliament by Boris Johnson was unlawful,
the Supreme Court ruled Tuesday in a huge setback for the prime minister
and his no-deal Brexit strategy.
2. 2030 energy efficiency targets receive EU boost
The Commission adopted on Wednesday three recommendations to help the
Member States with transposing and implementing the EU's amending
Directive on Energy Efficiency.
3. EU states agree taxonomy for sustainable business
EU ambassadors have given a green light to a proposal for a first
EU-wide classification system, or 'taxonomy', to allow businesses to
determine what economic activities can be termed sustainable.
4. One hour for Internet firms to remove terrorist content
Internet companies would be forced to remove content promoting terrorism
within an hour of being informed, under EU rules adopted by an EU
Parliament committee Wednesday.
5. EU staff budget savings come at a cost to workforce
A 2014 EU staff reforms package achieved significant savings, says a
report from the European Court of Auditors, but it had negative
consequences for human resources.
6. Nantes named European Capital of Innovation 2019
The city of Nantes in north-west France has been named the European
Capital of Innovation 2019, the Commission announced at the European
Research and Innovation Days.
Right to be forgotten: Google's 'right to be forgotten', defined as "the
right to silence on past events in life that are no longer occurring",
only applies in Member States, the EU's top Court ruled on Tuesday.
