Plans for EU telecoms watchdog 'struggle for support'

02 September 2008, 18:39 CET

(BRUSSELS) - EU proposals to set up a pan-European telecommunications watchdog are struggling to find support, a French official told the European Parliament Tuesday.

"A majority of member states remain very reluctant to the principle of creating an EU entity," said French State Secretary for Industry Luc Chatel, whose country holds the EU's rotating presidency.

The idea of creating an EU uber-regulator for telecommunications was one of the main planks of a shake-up of the sector that the European Commission proposed last year.

Chatel said that a "balance" had to be found between setting up a body loosely grouping together national regulators and creating an EU watchdog.
