- Europe builds a sustainable future with fusion — 24 April 2008, 19:03 CET
-
ITER, a joint international research project, will attempt to reproduce on Earth the nuclear reactions that power the Sun and other stars. To test whether this is possible, plasma turbulence simulation and modelling tools are being developed, but these require a huge amount of computing power to process data. This is where EUFORIA, a EUR 3.65 million EU-funded project, comes in. It aims to link computers from all over Europe and harmonise the simulations made in various areas of fusion.

- China joins search for fusion energy — 07 February 2008, 00:09 CET
-
The ITER project is one of the world's most ambitious project to date; it aims to build a fusion device, the likes of which have never been seen before. The scale of the project precludes it being undertaken by one country alone. Therefore, the European Union and six other countries have combined their efforts to demonstrate the scientific and technical feasibility of fusion power. And now China is further cementing its role as a partner in the project by announcing its contribution of around 10 billion Yuan (€95.2 million) to the vision.

-
The European Union (EU) is supporting biofuels with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, boosting the decarbonisation of transport fuels, diversifying fuel supply sources, offering new income opportunities in rural areas and developing long-term replacements for fossil fuel.
- Signing of first procurement arrangement marks ITER project progress — 29 November 2007, 17:12 CET
-
Signing a first procurement arrangement with Japan, the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) organisation has just taken an important step in the construction process. As a member of the international joint venture, Japan will provide nine out of a total of 18 Toroidal Field (TF) Coils that will confine the plasma within the ITER machine. A further ten - including a spare - will be produced in Europe.
- ITER — 29 November 2007, 17:08 CET
-
ITER is a joint international research and development project that aims to demonstrate the scientific and technical feasibility of fusion power. The partners in the project - the ITER Parties - are the European Union (represented by EURATOM), Japan, the People´s Republic of China, India, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation and the USA. ITER will be constructed in Europe, at Cadarache in the South of France. Fusion is the energy source of the sun and the stars. On earth, fusion research is aimed at demonstrating that this energy source can be used to produce electricity in a safe and environmentally benign way, with abundant fuel resources, to meet the needs of a growing world population.
- Commission proposes Strategic Energy Technology Plan — 23 November 2007, 18:50 CET
-
The European Commission has proposed a Strategic Energy Technology Plan with the goal of boosting research into the new, low carbon technologies which Europe will need if it is to meet its climate change targets.
- Towards a low carbon future: European Strategic Energy Technology Plan — 22 November 2007, 19:26 CET
-
The European Commission on 22 November 2007 adopted a proposal for a European Strategic Energy Technology Plan. Energy technology will be a key element of Europe's plans to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and move towards a low-carbon future. But there are structural weaknesses in the current energy research system (see MEMO/07/469 – Why Europe needs a Strategic Energy Plan). The SET-plan should help the European Union position itself to develop the technologies it needs to meet its political objectives and at the same time ensure its companies can benefit from the opportunities of a new approach to energy.
