    Green cars are the way forward, said Commissioner Antonio Tajani this week, launching the CARS 2020 initiative to boost the competitivity of Europe’s car industry.

    In addition to action to address the immediate problems afflicting the car sector, the Commission is proposing a big innovative push in research and innovation under the ‘Green Vehicle Initiative’, better access to credit for SMEs, and an EU standard recharging interface to facilitate a breakthrough for large-scale electric car production.

    With 12 million jobs depending on the sector, the auto industry is vital for Europe’s economy. The EU is now in a battle to maintain a world-class car industry, as well as to produce energy efficient and safe vehicles globally.
