In today’s connected economy, data is one of the key elements crucial to nearly every business.

From creating records of customers, to understanding their behaviour, all the way to providing a product or service, a never-ending stream of data must be generated and processed, but with DOMO research showing that over 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are produced every day, the secure and efficient transfer of this data is key to ensure your business and the economy runs smoothly.

In this guide, we look at data transfer in business and how you can adopt an efficient approach.

Why is data important to businesses?

Data holds key information about your business and its customers ? without it, very little would get done. But on top of forming the basis of your business, data can also be used to make your operations more efficient, or even be analysed to attract more customers and generate more sales.

Why does the transfer of data matter?

Ensuring you have efficient and secure data transfer is therefore a critical concern for any and every business. You will often need to quickly share and present data, so being able to transfer data from one digital device to another ? rapidly and without delay ? is key. Data is also a very sensitive asset, so making sure this data is transferred securely is just as important.

How can you ensure efficient data transfer?

The main thing to bear in mind is to use the right hardware. For instance, there are many types of USB ports that can be used for data transfer, so making sure to use the correct one for your device and the intended use is crucial.

For digital data transfer, there are many applications you can use to digitally transmit data from one device to another. This will need to be encrypted and sent in the right format too, so be sure to agree within your organisation what these are and set out clear rules that ensure everyone is using the same formats and processes.

    GDPR and Securing data

As previously mentioned, data is an extremely sensitive asset. The mishandling of data or compromise of data can lead to GDPR breaches ? the consequences of which can be significant, as the BBC’s analysis of the top fines shows.

To prevent your business being hit by a double whammy of reputational and financial damage, make sure only the intended recipient can view the data you are transferring within your business, especially when it comes to customer data.

Only keep data for the agreed period of time and use secure and encrypted methods for sharing data so you can be protected from bad actors. A company data protection policy and accompanying training is also important.

    Using cloud computing

One of the best ways to streamline the transfer of data within your business is by using cloud computing, mitigating the need for physical data storage within your office facility, and giving a central place for people to easily access the data they need if they have the right access needed. There are many different options available here, but enlisting the help of a data consultant can make it easier to pick the right solution for your business ? a solution that will work even as your business grows.
