The FMCSA or Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is responsible for issuing DOT numbers to moving companies. The DOT or Department of Transportation number is issued to the commercial vehicles such as big trucks that have been registered.

A DOT number is of utmost importance all types of commercial vehicles’ weight range exceeds a certain level – and are used for carrying a specific number of passengers – or are used for interstate movement.

The legal procedures or needs surrounding the registrations processes are complicated to understand – leading to confusion for companies that are new in the business. Also in most states of America, local DOT requirements are also held by law enforcement – such as the unique position of California DOT.

Below are some of the questions that are asked a lot about DOT number related processes:

    • What is the DOT certification all about?
    • How much is the expense of getting a DOT number?
    • Which businesses are there for whom it is mandatory to get a DOT number?
    • Does my truck business also need a DOT number?
    • What are the processes, requirements, and extra formalities of paperwork that are necessary for a DOT number?
    • Is there any requirement that trailers should be assigned a DOT number?

What is the DOT Certification About?

DOT certification is basically a proof of quality that has the purpose of telling that a driver is experienced, skilled, and competent enough to drive a commercial vehicle.

In most American states, a DOT certification is mandatory to drive commercial vehicles. In the category of commercial vehicles – we can count semi-trucks, other vehicles used for delivery, and public transportation.

A commercial driver’s license is very different from a personal driver’s license – and it requires that the vehicle is DOT certified. This means that drivers require a commercial driver’s license – because in any scenario – the license is shown as proof that a job applicant is DOT certified.

For acquiring the DOT certification – a driver is supposed to pass a physical exam and a series of safe-driving tests.

    Cost of a DOT Number?

It should be kept in mind that the registration process is free of charge and that the FMCSA website will ask you to submit your credit card number. It asks for the credit card number to verify your identity.

The website does not charge credit cards for filing the form or for the issuance of the USDOT number. Therefore, it’s a relief and you do not need to worry about the financial costs of using the FMCSA website for FMCSA registration.

The applicant’s credit card is used as a digital signature. This is to say that there is no alternative to credit-card submission when it comes to online application processing on the website.

And in case a person does not have a credit card or they are afraid that sharing their sensitive card information online makes them susceptible to risks – then such persons are ought to fill out a paper application. This paper application is sent in the mail to the FMCSA offices.

Do I Require a DOT Number?

It’s a popular misconception in fleet management that trucks that move around on a long-haul basis require to have a DOT number.

Any new business that plans to operate any type of commercial vehicle in America, the foremost thing that needs to be taken into account is to see whether a DOT number is needed or not.

While it’s true that most of the states do require a DOT number for many commercial vehicle operations, there is an exception of some states that do not have this requirement.
