COVID 19 and its Impact on the Small/Medium-Sized European Enterprises

No wonder the small and medium-sized firms have been the marrow of the European economy. However, as soon as COVID 19 hit the world, it changed the dynamics of how these businesses used to operate.

Because these businesses account for around two-thirds of the workforce, a large part of the European population get affected when the global pandemic pushed everyone within the four walls of their homes. According to recent research conducted this year, around 2200 SMEs in countries like France, Italy, Germany, UK, and Spain claimed about getting adversely affected due to this disease.

Around 70% of these businesses claimed a sudden decline in their annual revenue with mind-boggling negative effects. One out of every five company’s was concerned that they would eventually have to borrow loans to channel the ongoing business activities or lay off many employees at once. Moreover, around half of the businesses expressed their concern of having thoughts of not being able to survive in the long run. Despite the 20% of businesses having already acquired numerous advantages from the government, still, a lot of them vociferously articulated their concerns. Here are a few important details:

    Lower Revenues

The vast array of SMEs that have already been interviewed has expressed their grief over incurring huge losses. Although many would reflect that countries provide a lavish lifestyle to their residents, still the reality is much different than what anyone would have never thought about in their wildest dreams. On the other hand, the Spanish and Italian businesses have been the hardest hit with a major decline in their revenues. Therefore, when it is hard for the firms to fight the ongoing crisis, this has had a strong impact on the quality of life of several people working for them.

Right now, very few SMEs have expressed positivity about the prospects for improvement in the future. Unless the global pandemic doesn’t come slowly, it is hard to say if the SMEs will quickly begin to thrive at the previous rate or not. Although many such firms have even started to rely on traditional marketing techniques such as flyer printing, they are still going through a very tough phase. On the contrary, many experts have blamed the entire economy for being in its weakest phase right now. After all, when the EU government has levied strict laws on everyone, it is hard for most businesses to focus on channeling their activities in the same way that they used to in the past.

Secondly, there are strong differences amongst the countries that are strongly hit by the pandemic. Secondly, as the COVID 19 has made it hard for the MSEs to cater to the needs of their employees, it is hard for them to rest assured about providing incredible benefits to their current employees. Right now, with several businesses having incurred huge losses due to the global issue, it is hard to say if the situation will get back to normal in the coming years.
