The Importance of Professional Development in Employee Retention

Employee retention can feel like a hot topic, but it really isn’t. The fact is, employees stay with good employers. If they feel like they have it good where they are, are making good money, and feel happy in their role, they won’t want to leave. Instead, they’ll continue to put their talents and expertise in your business forward.

As a result, you’ll have access to top talent that you don’t need to waste time training. Instead, you get quality professionals who know your business inside out and actually play a crucial role in steering your business through all the challenges you might face in the future.

How do you keep those employees for longer? In addition to creating a healthy work environment and offering competitive pay, the answer lies in professional development. Chances are, some roles in your workplace will become redundant. That’s the nature of change. Redundancy, however, doesn’t mean that you have to kick those employees to the curb. Similarly, you don’t need to bring in new people for a small role when you can instead train existing employees.

In short, professional development is the secret sauce to boosting retention rates and also helping your business from the bottom up, so start today with these top tips.

    Invest in Professional Training Opportunities

The most obvious way to train employees is to invest in professional corporate training. These classes can help cover a range of topics, including project management, cybersecurity, or data analytics. Choose employees who would benefit from these skills and sponsor them. This means that the employees’ training cost is covered by your business, not paid for out of pocket.

    Offer Horizontal Development

Allow for shadowing. Give employees a few days of the month or year to follow others in a different team or role to learn the ropes. This is perfect for keeping hungry, passionate professionals in your workplace. Never judge where someone starts from. Great ideas can come from anyone, even the janitor, so offering the opportunity for entry-level personnel to try out new things and shadow other departments is a big must.

    Offer Scholarships

A great way to encourage hard workers to continue to work hard is by offering sponsorship opportunities if they do well. Your top earner, for example, can have access to such and such funds for their choice of professional development. This could be to learn a new language, start an online degree, and so on. How much you can sponsor depends entirely on your budget, but offering this benefit for top performers is a great way to retain your most talented employees.

    Send Employees to Events

Send your employees to talks, conferences, workshops, and the like. These events occur around the world all the time. By sponsoring their attendance, they can keep you and your company abreast of the latest thoughts, ideas, and recommendations. It’s a massive plus for businesses since it helps employees feel valued while also keeping your company at the forefront of your industry.
