For developers, combating cheating is a critical task that requires a mix of advanced technology, constant vigilance, and clever strategies (Source: Hathora). From detecting unusual behaviour patterns to implementing real-time anti-cheat systems, game developers work tirelessly to keep gameplay fair and enjoyable for everyone.

What is the Problem With Cheating in Online Multiplayer Games?

Cheating in online multiplayer games can negatively impact players, game publishers, and the gaming industry as a whole. Cheating can ruin the experience for other players, especially those who aren’t directly affected and it can deter players causing them to abandon the game. Another problem with cheating in online multiplayer games is that players might be less likely to spend money on the game if they feel it’s unfair.

    How Do Games Detect Cheating?

One of the most prevalent and reliable methods for detecting cheating in online games is server-side detection. This means that the game server watches and analyses each player’s data and activities, comparing them to the expected or usual range of values and behaviours.

What Should I Do If I Suspect Someone Is Cheating In Online Multiplayer Games?

Usually, the game you are playing has a section where you can report a player if you suspect their cheating. You can also block the player to make sure that you don’t play with them again.

How Do Developers Prevent Cheating in Online Multiplayer Games?

Online multiplayer games are meant to be fun and fair for everyone, but some players try to gain an unfair advantage by cheating or hacking. Cheating and hacking can ruin the game balance, frustrate honest players, and damage the reputation of the game developers. Here’s what developers do to prevent cheating in online multiplayer games:

    Use a Reliable Anti-Cheat System

One of the most essential ways to prevent cheating is to use a reliable anti-cheat system that can detect and ban players who use unauthorised methods to modify the game. An anti-cheat system can be client-side, server-side, or a hybrid of the two, depending on the game’s genre and complexity. A client-side anti-cheat system runs on the player’s device and searches for any suspicious programs or behaviours, whereas a server-side anti-cheat system monitors game data and logic on the server and alerts to any anomalies or inconsistencies.

    Implement Server Encryption

Another way to prevent cheating in online multiplayer games is to implement server authority and encryption, which means that the server has the final say on the game state and that the communication between the server and the client is secure and encrypted. Server authority can prevent common types of cheating and hacking like speed hacks, aimbots, wallhacks, or packet manipulation, by limiting the amount of information and control that the client has over the game.

Design the Game With Security in Mind

Another method for preventing cheating and hacking is to build the game with security in mind, which implies that the game mechanics and features are balanced and strong enough to discourage or counteract cheating and hacking. For example, the game could include a ranking system that matches players of similar skill levels, a reward system that encourages fair play while penalizing cheating, a reporting system that allows players to flag and review suspicious behaviour, and a moderation system that enforces game rules and policies.

Test and Audit the Game Regularly

Another technique to avoid cheating and hacking is to test and audit the game regularly. This means that game creators and testers look for flaws, glitches, exploits, or vulnerabilities that cheaters or hackers could use. Testing and auditing the game regularly can assist in discovering and resolving any issues before they spread or become dangerous, as well as improve the game’s quality and performance. Unit testing, integration testing, stress testing, penetration testing, code review, and user input are some of the approaches used to test and audit games.
