The European Commission's Health and Consumers DG keeps EU laws on the safety of food and other products, on consumers' rights and on the protection of people's health up-to-date. It also monitors that national, regional and local governments in the EU apply the health and consumer protection laws.

The Commissioners and their Spokespersons
Androula Vassiliou the Commissioner for Health, is responsible for public health issues, food safety and animal health and welfare. Her priorities include fostering good health in an aging Europe, creating an EU Health area by working on improving patients' rights and the quality and standards in health care facilities, maintaining high standards of food safety in the world and ensuring quick reactions to any threats that do arise. She also places high importance on securing the highest possible level of Animal Welfare throughout the EU, in line with consumer demand.
