Bathing water quality - Annual report, 2008 bathing season 11 June 2009, 18:29 CET
Every summer millions of Europeans head for the beach to enjoy the sun and to cool down in refreshing clean water. To allow Europeans to make an informed choice on which beach to choose a yearly report is published on the quality of coastal and freshwater bathing areas as reported by Member States for the beaches located within their territory. This year the report is being published by the European Environment Agency (EEA), which is also making available on its website maps and tables with detailed information on specific bathing areas.

The European Commission adopted a Communication on the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region on 10 June 2009. This is the first time that a comprehensive Strategy, covering several Community policies, is targeted on a 'macro-region'. The Strategy aims at coordinating action by Member States, regions, the EU, pan-Baltic organisations, financing institutions and non-governmental bodies to promote a more balanced development of the Region.

Greenhouse gas emissions growing faster 27 May 2009, 23:13 CET
A new report from the Joint Research Council (JRC) says that man-made global greenhouse gas emissions increased by 15% between 2000 and 2005, a sharp increase in the expected rate of growth. It also shows that global annual emissions of greenhouse gases increased from 24 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents in 1970 to 33 billion tonnes in 1990 and 41 billion tonnes in 2005.

Climate change affecting European birds: study 26 March 2009, 19:27 CET
Climate change is already affecting Europe's birds, according to a new study by Czech, Dutch and British scientists. The researchers arrived at their conclusion after developing the first ever indicator of the impact of climate change on wildlife on the continental scale. The indicator reveals that while some species are doing well as a result of climate change, the ranges of many more species are shrinking. The study is published in the journal PLoS ONE.
