================
Speaking at a governance conference at the European
Parliament, Development Commissioner Karel De Gucht has
suggested a European tax for multinationals who operate in
developing nations but squirrel profits off to tax havens.
The conference examined possible policy measures to
increase tax revenues in developing countries, and
develop a fairer international tax environment.

Mr De Gucht highlighted the critical role of tax systems in
development and the negative impacts of harmful tax
practices and non-cooperation on developing countries. He
made clear that helping developing countries to strengthen
their tax systems was not just a passing fad. It was "an
essential key to sustainable development and to enhance
ownership of poverty reduction policies".
