Publisher's Note
================
French president Nicolas Sarkozy has finally quashed the myth
of the Polish plumber. On a visit to Poland this week, he
announced that France would open its doors to eastern
workers from 1 July, the start of his country's six-month
EU presidency.
Fears of cheap eastern labour stealing French jobs were the
major reason for the 2005 'No' vote against the EU
constitution. Now, however, France sees Poland as a
valuable EU ally; and it also suffers from a shortage
of skilled labour.
The move will be noted by those countries that have still to
open up their labour markets. They might reflect that
France's decision is, as Employment Commissioner Spidla said,
"based on the reality of the job market: Polish plumbers
never went to France".
