With Christmas on the horizon, consumers rightly expect
producers of children's toys to put products on the market
which are safe. Their trust has, however, been dented lately
following recalls by US toymaker Mattel.
The European Parliament this week called on the EU to ensure
that consumer products marketed in the Union comply fully
with existing EU standards. Some MEPs also called for a
strengthening of the 'CE' label on goods.
A revision of the Toys Directive, planned for the end of
this year, should include tougher inspections and customs
controls. The argument for giving the 'CE' label effective
regulatory weight is also getting stronger, as many
consumers view the label as a guarantee of the safety
and quality of a product.
