================
A bad week for British farmers. An EU ban on meat and
livestock from Britain, which had been only just been lifted,
was reimposed on Wednesday following confirmation of a fresh
outbreak of foot and mouth disease in south-east England.
The EU's Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal
Health has now designated Britain a "high-risk zone" until
October 15, subject to review. While the UK is, according to
the Commission, complying with all relevant EU directives,
the earliest date it can regain full disease-free status,
under World Organisation for Animal Health rules, is three
months after the last foot and mouth case is diagnosed.
