Publisher's Note
================
It was not only business which welcomed the European
People's Party's victory in the euro-elections - the SME
UNION said a strong EPP would "help Europe to emerge
stronger from the crisis" - Commission president Jose Manuel
Barroso followed up by putting himself forward for a second
term.

With France and Germany on Thursday throwing their weight
behind Mr Barroso - who promised "an ambitious programme"
including tougher supervision of banks and tackling climate
change - many countries are now looking for his candidacy
to be endorsed by EU leaders at their summit in Brussels
next week.

Comment of the Week
-------------------
Commenting on our piece "Netherlands defends early release
of poll results", Martyn Howie writes:

"I wholeheartedly support the decision of the Dutch
government to release the result. It is courtesy to the
voters in Holland to be given the poll result as soon as it
can be obtained it increases interest and participation at
a local and National level ... In my view any action
against the Dutch will be counter productive and an
insult to the Dutch electorate."
