    Europe has formally opened an antitrust probe into Google, after rivals accused it of rigging the online search market. Smaller companies accuse the Internet king of “unfavourable treatment” in both unpaid and sponsored search results, and “preferential placement” of Google’s own services, such as YouTube, book-scanning and telephony.

    Google holds more than 90 per cent of Europe’s search market, says Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia, so it is right that his department should monitor closely companies that might abuse their dominant position. However, it is not right that firms such as comparison sites, who exist on the back of search engines and are often an obstacle to searchers finding what they are want, should receive preferential treatment.
