    European Commission: The Directorates-General Research DG

    The Research DG of the European Commission develops the EU’s policy in the field of research and technological development and thereby contributes to Europe’s competitiveness, coordinates European research activities and supports the Union’s policies in other fields such as environment, energy, regional development and health.     European Commission: Information Society and Media DG

    The Information Society and Media DG supports the development and use of information and communications technologies for the benefits of the EU citizens. It defines and implements regulatory framework for e.g. communication and audiovisual technologies and content industries. Emphasis is on fostering competition and letting the market decide on technology.

    The Commissioners and their Spokespersons

    Viviane Reding is Commissioner for Information Society and Media. She sees information society to be crucial in achieving the Lisbon goals of creating a competitive, sustainable and socially inclusive Europe. She also oversees the development of the framework for Europe’s audiovisual sector.

    Neelie Kroes is the Commissioner responsible for Competition. She aims to promote a fair and free environment for business in Europe. She sees reinforcing the fight against cartels and developing private antitrust damage actions as two tools for a more competitive Europe.
