The European Commission has adopted a new EU Livestock Strategy with a view to strengthening Europe’s food security, reinforcing its strategic autonomy and helping ‘sustain vibrant rural communities’.
Responding to geopolitical tensions and supply disruptions, the EU Commission has presented measures to help farmers facing sharply rising fertiliser costs, with the aim of supporting Europe’s food security.
There were 9.4 million beehives on EU farms in 2023, according to Eurostat, with the number of beehives increasing by 1.3 million (+16%), from 8.1 million in 2020.

80 per cent of European citizens say NO to patents on seeds
No Patents on Seeds! have published a representative survey conducted in five EU member states, i.e. France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland. The results clearly show that around 80 percent of EU citizens reject the idea of granting patents on living organisms, e.g. patents on plants or animals.

The EU’s new bioeconomy strategy, adopted buy EU states, aims for a sustainable bioeconomy by 2040 and promotes the use of bio-based solutions across all relevant sectors as fossil-free alternatives.
