Europe consumes an unfair proportion of the world’s resources, and the European Commission this week set out a ‘roadmap’ to transform Europe’s economy into a sustainable one by 2050.
The ‘Roadmap to a resource-efficient Europe’ identifies where most resources are consumed, and puts forward measures such as promoting green innovation, a greater role for eco-design and eco-labelling, and greener spending by public bodies.
Green growth may well be the only sustainable future. Reducing consumption of scarce resources could also protect our economy from the effects of increasingly expensive commodities. But governments desperate to kickstart economic growth may not see this as the most politically attractive option.
