    More standards for Europe and faster: this, says the European Commission, is the goal of a series of measures presented this week to strengthen the system of standard-setting in Europe.

    Highlights of the plan include enhancing cooperation with leading European standardisation organisations; drafting standards with the help of consumers and small businesses; recognising global ICT standards; and increasing European standards for services if there is a demand from business.

    The new strategy is welcome, particularly the aim to involve SMEs in the process of drafting standards. Europe needs a dynamic European standardisation system to react to the challenge of rapid innovation and technology convergence, as well as the challenge of fierce global competition.
