The European Commission is addressing increasing geopolitical tensions, geo-economic fragmentation and technological shifts that are posing challenges for the European economy and Europe’s economic security in a new Economic Security Package issued today.

EuroCommerce, representing the European retail and wholesale sector, is applauding the Commission for tackling these developments but cautions the institution to ensure the competitiveness of European companies.

Director General Christel Delberghe commented: “The framework for doing business globally has become more difficult over the past few years with a proliferation of supply chain disruptions and our sector has continuously adapted as an essential part of the global supply chain. We are committed to supporting and improving already existing EU measures to strengthen the EU economy and the Communication presented today is a good basis. We also need to ensure that small and large businesses alike will be able to follow any new rules issued trying to solve these complex problems without jeopardising their global competitiveness.”

EuroCommerce welcomes the intention of the EU to take the lead in defining a shared agenda with partners when it comes to export controls and is also pleased that the Commission is seeking improved coordination between the Member States and the Commission in this respect.
