6 ways to make the most of your office space

A home office is no longer seen as a luxury, but rather an essential part of the home. While you don’t have to dedicate an entire room – a corner or section of another room will do – there are a few key items you should invest in to make the most out of your space.

With the freedom to decorate as you please, you should take full advantage of your office being in your home and get creative. Here are just a few ways you can make the most out of your home office, giving you a boost of motivation when you need it most.

    Invest in high quality furniture

Many people don’t seem to realise just how important their choice of furniture is. As well as choosing ergonomic laptops and chairs for comfort, you should be mindful of the damage your furniture may do to your flooring. Desk legs and chair wheels are known to scratch or dent flooring but there are a number of ways you can prevent this from happening once you’re aware of the issue. This includes purchasing smooth-moving castor wheels, which prevent scrapes and are easy to attach to most types of furniture or putting down protective rugs.

As noted, ergonomic chairs are essential in preventing back pain and are well worth investing in. You’ll be sat there for a large part of the day, and ergonomic furniture is specifically designed to keep your neck, back, and eyes safe.

    High quality tech

There’s nothing worse than having a technology failure while in the midst of a virtual meeting or important piece of work. Ensure your laptop or desktop is fully functioning and invest in a second monitor to speed up your work if needed. This is particularly handy for those who need to need to do separate tasks at the same time, such as typing while in a video conference or research while writing. Consider what other gadgets will assist you, such as a tablet or design pen.

    Get creative with your decor

Limit distractions and maintain a professional space by choosing your decor wisely. Rid your space of any distractions such as televisions; if you’re in your living room, either face your desk away from it or get a foldable screen. Separation screens are a great way of creating a segregated home and work space if you don’t have a room to spare, helping you switch off at the end of a long day.

Decor wise, blue, yellow, green and grey are known to be great colour choices for the office due to their motivational nature. Posters are a key addition, especially those that spark creativity and motivate rather than distract. Give the area makeover with a fresh coat of paint, add some decorative stationery and you’ll have a stunning space to work in.

    Add plants to your space

As well as adding colour to dull rooms, plants improve air quality and are thought to reduce stress. Whether it’s a row of small succulents or a mini jungle, adding some greenery can boost your mood, create an improved work environment and rid the air of harmful pollutants. There are plenty of plants that don’t need much care if you aren’t looking for extra responsibility, such as cacti, aloe vera and spider plants.

    Declutter

Having a messy space is undoubtedly a distraction. Keep your space clean and tidy, ensuring to file important documents in an organised fashion but off of your desk. A small storage unit or filing cabinet that slots underneath the desk is ideal, although there are a myriad of options to suit all spaces. While decor is important, you don’t want to overdo it. Too many ornaments lead to distraction; you want to keep it professional, as if you were in a business space. Make sure to have a weekly clean to maintain this.

By following these six simple tips, you’re guaranteed to have a vibrant yet professional home office in no time.
