Sport in the European Union

Sport is viewed in Europe as an essential part of the lives of millions of European citizens. Sport is strongly embedded in European culture and the sector plays an important role in Europe's economy.

With the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty in December 2009, the EU acquired a supporting competence in the field of sport and can henceforth promote European sporting issues.
