A conference on the 'Challenges of education and innovation' will take place on 13 and 14 January 2010 in Berlin, Germany.

Attendees Young scientists engaged in post-graduate or post-doctoral studies from EU, associated, as well as third countries are invited to participate. Young scientists from Central and Eastern European countries are particularly encouraged to apply. Participation of researchers from all agricultural disciplines is envisaged.
Participants who have played an active role at MACE Summer Schools or Training Courses can also apply. Members of the EU 27 and Associated States may apply for funding. For a limited number of participants from other countries as well as Germany funding is also available.

The conference will provide a special forum for eligible researchers to build contacts with their peers from across Europe. Young scientists are expected to play an active role at the conference.

The conference will concentrate on the challenges of education and innovation in the Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC). The focus will mainly be on innovation processes in agriculture linked to the spread of knowledge in rural areas.

Topics to be addressed are the following:
- the modernisation of agriculture and economic development;
- investment in research and development in the CEEC;
- education, extension, innovation and growth in rural areas;
- rural extension services: public/private arrangements in knowledge provision to farmers;
- the institutional environment for knowledge spreading in rural areas.

The event is organised as part of the EU-funded project MACE ('Modern agriculture in Central and Eastern Europe: tools for the analysis and management of rural change').
