Hungary eyes Azeri gas after South Stream scrapping

(BUDAPEST) - Hungary is looking at alternative sources of gas including notably Azerbaijan after Russia scrapped its South Stream pipeline project, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said Tuesday.

"In order to secure Hungary's long-term energy supply, we have to look for additional opportunities, and among these options gas deliveries from Azerbaijan to Central Europe via the southern gas corridor features prominently," Peter Szijjarto said.

"However this is only one of the options," the foreign ministry quoted Szijjarto as telling state news agency MTI.

Russian President Vladimir Putin unexpectedly announced on Monday in Ankara that Moscow was scrapping a planned pipeline bringing Russian gas under the Black Sea to the European Union and bypassing crisis-hit Ukraine.

Hungary was on the route of the planned pipeline, together with Bulgaria, Serbia and Slovenia, Italy and Austria.

Defying criticism from Brussels, the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban -- seen as having close ties to Putin -- had pledged that Hungary would start building its section next year.
