Montenegrin support for EU sees slight drop

(PODGORICA) - Support in Montenegro for the European Union dropped by eight percent compared with a year ago, although it remains at over 60 percent, a poll released Tuesday showed.

According to the poll of some 1,035 people conducted in September, 62 percent supported Montenegro's bid for EU membership.

In December 2010, after Montengro was awarded candidacy status by Brussels support for the EU stood at 70 percent.

Podgorica is hoping that the European Commission will propose a date to open accession talks on October 12 when its due to make its recommendations for a number of EU-hopefuls in the Balkans.

Support for the country's ambitions to join NATO also dropped slightly to 31 percent from 35 percent in November last year.

Montenegro joined NATO's Partnership for Peace programme after proclaiming independence in 2006 and was granted a membership action plan in 2009.
