Greece must recover EUR 310m in shipyard state aid

Shipyard

(LUXEMBOURG) - The Greek government must take back some 310 million euros in aid given to a naval shipyard because the payment breaches EU law, the European Court of Justice ruled Thursday.

The case dates back to 2008 when the European Commission called for state aid to be recovered from the Ellinika Nafpigeia naval shipyard since it also supplied civilian products, not equipment exclusively for the military.

The shipyard, in the main port city of Pireaus south of Athens, argued however that it had to have some civilian production to help support its military activities.

The ECJ ruled however that while EU law allowed member states to preserve their national security interests, they remained forbidden to take any action which could impair competition in civilian economic activities.

On this basis, the Greek state aid was ruled illegal and would have to be repaid, it added.
