EBA to release EU bank data in September

(PARIS) - The European Banking Authority is to publish detailed findings on 65 major European banks only in September, but will release some general information in early July, a spokesman said Tuesday.

The EBA has instructed large European banks to raise core cash reserves to a minimum of nine percent of total assets, and expects to see the banks' figures by the end of June.

But before the banking authority can pore over the detailed data, EBA officials plan to make an accounting of how the exercise was handled in broader terms, the spokesman said.

Last year the EBA called on European banks to raise their capital by 115 billion euros ($145 billion) to meet the target, which is higher and earlier than banks need to meet under new Basel III international regulations.

On Monday EBA chief Andrea Enria said he was satisfied with efforts by European banks to meet higher capital ratios.

However, European banks warned earlier this month that problems raising fresh capital were pushing them to cut back on lending so as to meet the tough new regulations and urged a delay in putting them into force.
