Turkish FM to hold talks with EU officials
(ANKARA) - Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu will hold talks with European Union officials in Brussels Friday over his country's faltering membership bid, a foreign ministry statement said.
Davutoglu was to meet with the EU's foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule and Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom, the statement said.
He was also to take part in a Council of Europe-EU meeting, in his capacity as current chairman of the Council of Europe, to discuss regional developments, and meet with Belgian counterpart Stevan Vanackere, it said.
Out of 35 policy chapters that candidates must negotiate, Turkey has opened talks on only 13 since its accession negotiations began in 2005.
Eight chapters remain frozen as a sanction for Turkey's refusal to open its ports to Greek Cypriot vessels under a trade pact with the EU, with France and Cyprus blocking several others.
