Eurozone November trade surplus rises

(BRUSSELS) - The 17-state eurozone posted a November trade surplus of 13.7 billion euros ($18.3 billion), up from a downwards-adjusted 9.3 billion euros in October, official data showed on Tuesday.

Last month, the October figure was put at 10.2 billion euros, up from 9.5 billion euros in September.

Eurozone exports in November, in seasonally adjusted terms, rose by 0.8 percent from October while imports fell 1.5 percent, the Eurostat statistics office said.

In marked contrast, the full 27-member EU suffered a trade deficit of 1.7 billion euros but this was still far better than the 9.3-billion-euros deficit announced the previous month and an even bigger one in September.

Seasonally-adjusted EU exports rose 1.1 percent with imports down 3.0 percent.

A trade surplus contributes to growth, whereas a trade deficit tends to reduce it.
