(BRUSSELS) - EU lawmakers approved Wednesday Neven Mimica as the Commissioner for Consumer Affairs, giving new-member Croatia its seat at the bloc's top decision-making table.

Mimica's appointment was cleared by a large majority of 565 to 64 ahead of Croatia's formal adhesion on July 1 as the EU's 28th member state.

Mimica, currently deputy prime minister in Croatia's Social Democrat government, will serve until a new Commission, the EU's executive arm, takes office in October 2014 after elections for the European Parliament.

He has held several posts dealing with the EU and was Zagreb's chief negotiator during Croatia's accession talks with Brussels.

The consumer protection portfolio previously came under the remit of EU Health Commissioner Tonio Borg but has been hived off to provide Croatia with its place.

Mimica's appointment will be formally approved at an EU leaders' summit next week.
