(BRUSSELS) - European Parliament chief Jerzy Buzek on Tuesday condemned the deaths of two Bahraini Shiite activists while in custody and expressed concern over reports they had been tortured.

"The death of Ali Issa Saqer and Zakaraya Rashed Hassan in the hands of the Bahraini police is unacceptable," Buzek said in a statement.

"I am deeply concerned by concurrent reports of several human rights organisations that both activists had been tortured in prison and might have been killed," he added.

Saqer, 31, died at the hands of prison security guards after "causing chaos in detention", police said, while Hassan, 40, was "found dead" in his prison cell. Both had been arrested in the wake of anti-regime protests in the Gulf kingdom.

Buzek also condemned "the detention of more than 400 human rights activists, bloggers and opposition supporters in Bahrain."

"I call for a credible investigation into the recent deaths and all violations of human rights. Those who were responsible for any abuses must face justice," he said.
