The EU DIY Market Is Changing

In 2017 the European DIY market grew by 2% reaching a massive EUR 726.5 billion. The actual range of products on offer increased by 0.9% however the gardening range shrank by 0.1%.

Recent research shows that a strong interest in home improvement and people wanting to do household and gardening jobs themselves over hiring a tradesperson have helped stimulate a solid growth in the EU DIY market. And despite the gardening range shrinking, the trends actually show a forecast of around 2% growth every year until 2022 in the horticulture segment.

There are a vast range of businesses set up in nearly all European countries to help homeowners with their home improvements and gardening needs. With Brexit looming in the UK, many property owners are choosing to stay put and are now making their current house their dream home. Good news for the EU DIY market for sure.

What are the challenges the DIY market faces?

Despite this surge in homeowners striving to make a lot of household and gardening changes themselves, there are still certain things that remain beyond their capability. For example those wanting to give their kitchen a refurb or a complete refit may resort to hiring an external tradesperson to complete the job. However, there are ways the EU DIY market can tap into this sector. While many cannot afford a costly kitchen refit, they may look to repaint cabinets and fit work surfaces themselves. Ideal for the DIY market across Europe for the sale of paint, brushes and accessories.

Many European DIY companies may choose to lean on statistics reported from estate agents that a new kitchen typically adds 5.5% to a properties value, sometimes even up to 10%. A kitchen project, if not too big and demanding, can easily be tackled by the homeowner.

Where can European DIY companies gain traction?

With the uncertainty around Brexit, DIY companies must strive to turn this into a positive by tapping further into the homeowner market. With statistics showing less people are putting their houses on the market, now is a prime time for businesses to push hard on their DIY range.

If you’re looking to add value to your home and start your own home improvements, companies like SGS Engineering offer an extensive range of commercial standard domestic products for the garden, home and garage.
