What is a VPS Server and How Does It Help Business?

01 December 2018, 14:17 CET

A Virtual Private Server (VPS) is a type of web server that is offered mostly to businesses.

It presents a scalable option for companies to create online solutions like a website, a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) business, or cloud solution to facilitate connections to a mobile app.

Let’s now look in more detail at VPS servers and how businesses can benefit.

What is a VPS server?

A VPS server is several steps up from a shared web hosting server where a limited amount of allocated tech resources is provided to each customer. Many websites are run on these overworked and underpowered servers, which causes them to typically offer limited performance. A far better solution for EU businesses is a virtual private server.

With a virtual private server, only a limited number of customers are hosted on each server. Each physical server is given substantially more resources like extra processor cores, physical RAM memory, disk space, and bandwidth capability.

Individualised Hosting

With a VPS, the customer and not the hosting company gets to decide on what is an appropriate hosting solution. Using a virtual setup, the web host can create pretty much any type of computing configuration that is required based on the requirements of the customer.

A VPS server can be configured and made available in as little as five minutes. There’s no waiting around for several hours in a queue until the server is ready for use. This is because of the unique structure of VPS systems whereby running through a series of options, a server is spun up for the private use of one customer. The server has the right operating system and web server software, as needed, along with some basic installations, the right amount of CPU cores, memory, and other specifics.

Companies don’t have to try to pick between different server solutions, none of which exactly meet their needs. Instead, they just create their own based on their past experience and see how that performs for them. With some trial and error, companies can obtain a higher relative performance for an affordable price.

Cloud-based Infrastructure

The cloud-based infrastructure is far superior to many other hosting solutions for several reasons.

Firstly, it’s accessible from anywhere. It’s almost instantly available to access, configure, and get running.

Secondly, when the traffic spikes because the business just launched a new product or is taking part in a new promotion, the server can be immediately optimised to manage the traffic surge. The number of available CPU cores allocated to the VPS can be boosted, the pre-set bandwidth allowance adjusted upwards significantly, and the RAM memory increased to allow more web pages to be served to website visitors in the same amount of time.

Thirdly, switching from one server to another or load-balancing between several cloud servers becomes a possibility when the cloud is optimised to the business’ needs. A professional VPS specialist will be able to handle traffic spikes and a varied requirement list for EU business without any difficulty.

For expanding businesses that see online activity on their sites increasing month to month, using a VPS makes sense over less robust, restrictive hosting solutions. They offer greater flexibility and increased power at a very affordable price.
