Amcham EU presents industry priorities to Italian Presidency

02 July 2003, 12:18 CET

As the Italian Presidency is launched, the American Chamber of Commerce to the European Union - AmCham EU - presents the legislative priorities of companies of American parentage committed to Europe for the next six months.

The Italian Presidency coincides with the WTO fifth Ministerial Conference of Cancun in September. AmCham EU will support initiatives, that drive towards a successful conclusion of the Doha Development Round, as reviving the transatlantic relationship is key for the growth of the global economy.

An efficient single market is essential for a competitive economy. AmCham EU calls for progress on the 10 points listed in the Internal Market Strategy 2003-2006, and advocates the rapid implementation of better regulation measures.

The successful development of the digital economy is crucial for the future of Europe. AmCham EU urges the Italian Presidency to prioritize the eEurope action plan high, and to ensure that the new telecoms package is successfully implemented.

AmCham EU asks the Italian Presidency to approach CSR in a balanced and holistic manner, with initiatives that will include industry in the development of policies on CSR and sustainable development. More consideration should be given to environmental issues in order to balance the political discussions on CSR.

As Italy will preside over the next inter-governmental conference, during which the draft constitution of the EU will be further developed, AmCham EU urges the Italian Presidency to ensure that businesses can operate in a legal environment which is characterized by legal certainty. Any rules imposed on businesses should be clearly attributable to a specific authority, and based upon a rule of law which is easily accessible and understandable.

AmCham EU - the American Chamber of Commerce to the European Union – aims to ensure an optimum business and investment climate for companies in Europe. AmCham EU is the voice of companies of American parentage committed to Europe towards the institutions and governments of the European Union on trade, investment and competitiveness issues. We facilitate the resolution of EU-US issues that impact business and play a role in creating better understanding of EU-US positions on business matters.
