Superbug threat to health - EUbusiness Week newsletter 764
EUbusiness Week 764 top stories: EU charts course for Euro economy; Budget 2017 focuses on migration and security; New travel system to tighten security at EU borders; States agree visa-free travel for Ukraine in principle; Brussels slaps anti-dumping duties on Chinese steel, iron; Deep-sea fish quotas agreed for 2017-18
Today's European Antibiotic Awareness Day is a timely reminder of the
global health threat of bacteria resistant to antibiotics and its severe
social and economic implications. Inaction could cost an estimated 10
million deaths globally per year, as well as a cumulative loss of over
EUR 88 trillion to the world economy by 2050.
A reminder also of the need for coordinated international action, for the EU to step up its own efforts, and for its Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance, set for 2017, to match the scale of the problem.
