China tariff cut a sign it has to deal with Trump after impeachment vote

Responding to news that China has halved tariffs on more than 1,700 US goods, Nigel Driffield, Professor of International Business at Warwick Business School said:

"I suspect that after the impeachment vote, China realises it is going to have to deal with Trump and his belief that tariffs are a major tool of diplomacy.

"Free trade is undoubtedly good for China. With their economy slowing and coronavirus impacting on business, this announcement will be seen as recognition that reduction of tariffs can benefit everyone.

"Normally, such a move would be announced on the understanding that the other side will not claim a "supreme victory", but one never knows with Trump."
