SMEs call for investment certainty and assistance

"To make climate policy a win-win for planet and SMEs, a net emission climate target for 2040 should be set in due time, to ensure planning stability and investment certainty. It must be robust and feasible for our economy and society", said SMEunited's Secretary General Véronique Willems.

SMEunited welcomes the focus shift towards an enabling framework for industry decarbonisation. How we can get to minus 90 per cent in a shared effort is as important – if not more – than determining intermediate goals for 2040.

Individually, SMEs have relatively small carbon footprints. However, as a group the impacts are much larger: SMEs share a total of 63 per cent of all carbon and greenhouse gas emissions among all enterprises. Decarbonisation policies must therefore include the support of SMEs as a core element.

The Industry Decarbonisation Deal must work towards a simplified regulatory environment and dedicated support for SMEs to access finance for green  investments. Moreover, SMEs should profit from streamlining application processes for existing EU funds, developing user-friendly platforms, guidance and reducing administrative burdens. The European Commission must stimulate the offer of technical assistance, as for example through the Covenant of Companies for Climate and Energy. This assistance must be provided close to the entrepreneur along with mutual learning organised at European level.

SMEunited is the association of Crafts and SMEs in Europe with around 70 member organisations from over 30 European countries. SMEunited represents national cross-sectoral Craft and SME federations, European SME branch organisations and associate members. Combined, we represent more than 12 million enterprises with around 55 million employees across Europe. SMEunited is also a recognised employers' organisation and European Social Partner. SMEunited was formally known as UEAPME.
