Emergency call: mitigate energy price rises for SMEs

28 September 2022
by smeunited -- last modified 28 September 2022

SMEunited urges EU Energy Ministers to adopt the measures proposed by the European Commission to tackle high energy prices at their meeting on Friday. In addition, the Commission should come forward with the reviewed State aid crisis framework as soon as possible allowing Member States to implement price-cutting measures for SMEs.

"More and more SMEs are hit by extreme rises in electricity and gas prices and have to stop or reduce their production or are loss-making", underpinned SMEunited President Salminen the request for urgent action by European and national politicians.

The adoption of the proposed Council Regulation would oblige Member States to use the resources from the revenue cap on inframarginal electricity producers to support households and SMEs. Furthermore, the regulation would allow Member States to introduce energy price caps for SMEs in the retail market, helping them to survive the current crisis.

SMEunited also calls on the European Commission to agree as soon as possible on the prolongation and extension of the State aid crisis framework, which has to make energy price reductions for SMEs State aid conform.

Finally, SMEunited, together with its member organisations, demands that national governments immediately implement the emergency interventions put forward by the Council Regulation to ensure the survival of those SMEs most impacted by the energy crisis.

SMEunited is the association of Crafts and SMEs in Europe with around 70 member organisations from over 30 European countries. Combined, they represent more than 12 million enterprises with around 55 million employees across Europe. SMEunited is also a recognised employers' organisation and European Social Partner.
